This year’s final promises to be a thriller, as Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC face off once again at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

A Rematch with Everything on the Line

The 2025/26 MTN8 final is a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s showdown. Orlando Pirates, the defending champions, are chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.

In last year’s final, the Buccaneers defeated Stellenbosch 3-1, with star performances from the likes of Monnapule Saleng and Relebohile Mofokeng.

Since that victory, a lot has changed for Ezimnyama Ngenkani. Saleng has since been sent on loan and Abdeslam Ouaddou has been appointed at the helm of the cup kings following Jose Riviero’s departure.

Their road to the final included a dramatic penalty shootout win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals, following a tense 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC is out for revenge. Having narrowly missed out on their first top-eight trophy last season, the Cape Winelands team has made it clear they are coming for silverware.

Their strong cup run saw them defeat AmaZulu in the quarterfinals and secure a 3-1 aggregate victory over Sekhukhune United in the semi-finals.

Star Players to Watch

This final pits an experienced playmaker against a young star, setting the stage for a compelling midfield battle.

Lesiba Nku – Stellies’ Silent Architect

Club: Stellenbosch FC

Position: Winger

Age: 29

Lesiba Nku has quietly become one of Stellies’ most effective weapons. In the 2025/26 semi-final first leg against Sekhukhune United, he stepped in early after Ashley Cupido’s injury and delivered a standout performance:

*Two assists, including a pinpoint corner for Kazie’s opener

*Nearly scored himself, striking the crossbar in the 55th minute

*Tactical awareness and delivery praised by coach Steve Barker

Nku’s ability to read the game and execute under pressure makes him a threat from wide areas. If Stellies are to lift the trophy, Nku’s creativity could be the difference.

Relebohile Mofokeng – The Game Changer

Club: Orlando Pirates

Position: Attacking Midfielder

Age: 20

In last season’s MTN8 final, Relebohile Mofokeng proved why he’s one of South Africa’s brightest young talents. Coming off the bench against Stellenbosch, he turned the tide with a dazzling display:

*Assisted Tshegofatso Mabasa

*Scored the decisive third goal

*Injected pace, vision, and composure when it mattered most

Mofokeng’s performance was a masterclass in impact play—showing maturity beyond his years and a hunger for the spotlight. Expect him to be a key figure again if Pirates need a spark.

The Heritage of the MTN8

The 2025/26 champions will not only take home the trophy but also a new, exclusive piece of heritage. MTN is introducing a special MTN8 crest that will be worn on the sleeve of the reigning champions. This unique emblem will serve as a powerful symbol of their elite achievement in the WafaWafa knockout competition. Whether you’re rooting for the Buccaneers or the Wineland warriors, this year’s final is set to be a memorable one!

Mbombela Stadium

Nestled in the heart of Mpumalanga, Mbombela Stadium is a true architectural gem with a seating capacity of 43,500. Its most iconic features—18 towering orange columns shaped like giraffes and seating patterned in bold black-and-white zebra stripes—pay tribute to the region’s rich wildlife heritage.

The stadium’s vibrant colours and open design foster a warm, welcoming atmosphere, while the close proximity of the pitch to the stands creates an intimate viewing experience rarely found in large international venues.

Mbombela has proudly hosted some of the country’s biggest football moments, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the recent 2024 Nedbank Cup Final (Mamelodi Sundowns vs. Orlando Pirates).
