Stellenbosch FC are on the brink of making history as they prepare to face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 Cup Final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The match is set to kick off tomorrow at 18h00, and Stellenbosch’s coach, Steve Barker, is filled with anticipation for the encounter. This final presents a chance for the Winelands side to secure their first MTN8 title, adding to their trophy cabinet after their victory in the Carling Knockout Cup last December.
Reflecting on their journey, Barker noted, “Normally we play this competition after three or four league games, but we have already played our tenth match and we are going to our eleventh in all competitions.”
This experience, he believes, will serve as an advantage against a seasoned Pirates side. “Pirates have that experience from the last two seasons, going for a third win, which is a magnificent opportunity for them,” he acknowledged.
However, he expressed his team’s determination to forge their own path. “We want to create our history, and by doing that we have to go on and win the trophy.”
Last season saw Stellenbosch finishing third in the league and also clinching the Carling Knockout Cup title, illustrating their growth as a competitive force.
Barker emphasised the importance of their previous final experience: “Being in finals is not easy. It takes a lot of special runs and special matches.” His players are motivated by past successes, especially against Pirates, having won three times in their last meetings, including two league victories and a semi-final clash.
The Western Cape club will look to their in-form striker, Bradley Mojela, who has netted four goals this season, to challenge the Pirates’ defence.
Pirates and Stellenbosch previously met in the MTN8 semi-finals last season, where Pirates advanced on away goals despite a tightly contested tie.
Historically, clubs from Gauteng have dominated the MTN8, claiming 42 out of the 49 titles. For Stellenbosch, a win would not only secure a significant trophy but also represent a rare achievement for teams outside Gauteng, as only seven sides have previously managed this feat.
Pirates, who are chasing their third consecutive MTN8 title, possess a strong squad led by coach Jose Riveiro, who is keen to avoid dwelling on the potential records. “I am not a person who thinks so much about those things until they become facts,” he stated, emphasising their focus on securing the win rather than the historical implications.
Riveiro acknowledged the challenge posed by Stellenbosch, calling them a worthy opponent. “This final is the toughest one in my opinion because of the characteristics of our opponent,” he said.
Pirates will rely on their star player, Deon Hotto, who has been a thorn in Stellenbosch’s side over the years, scoring four goals against them in past encounters.
As both teams gear up for this monumental clash, football fans can expect an electrifying contest filled with determination, skill, and the quest for glory.
