Motsepe Foundation Championship: Upington City Head Coach Steps Down

Abram Mongoya has officially resigned as head coach of Upington City, just six matches into the 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.

His departure comes as a surprise, given the club’s relatively solid start to the campaign.

Nicknamed Bafana Ba Gucci, Upington City currently sit sixth on the league table with 10 points, having registered three wins, one draw, and two losses.

Their most recent outing ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Milford FC, and they are set to face the University of Pretoria this coming weekend.

Mongoya joined Upington City at the beginning of the season following a successful stint at Kruger United, where he led the club to an impressive fifth-place finish in their debut National First Division campaign.

His appointment was seen as a strategic move to build on Upington’s growing ambitions in the second tier of South African football.

Confirming his resignation to KickOff, Mongoya stated simply: “Yes, I have resigned,” without elaborating on the reasons behind his decision. The club has yet to announce a replacement or comment on the implications of his departure.

“But this is not my place to talk about that, but the chairman’s. I am not a person of media, and please respect that.”

Upington City will now look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next fixture, hoping to maintain momentum despite the sudden coaching change.
