The win lifted Amakhosi to the summit of Group D, but the Glamour Boys still need at least a draw or another victory in their final clash against Zamalek at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.

A 3-1 victory would have ensured that third placed Al Masry cannot surpass Chiefs based on head-to-head clashes, which both ended 2-1 in favour of both sides.

“There’s still a lot of work to do,” said Motaung Jr to SABC Sport after the match.

“The permutations can go different kind of ways next, so there’s a big job for us to do when we get to Egypt.

“Big job next week, we will talk once we know we’re through for certain next week, but now there’s one more big game next week. We showed character today [vs Al Masry], wasn’t the prettiest. But we knew we had to get a win.”

The Soweto giants will be looking to progress past the group stage of CAF competitions for the first time since the 2020/21 season, where the lost 3-0 in the final to Al Ahly.

“We would have loved to get the two goals to qualify automatically, but determination, courage, was there, they fought hard and at the end of the day we got three points, put ourselves in a position to make sure it’s in our hands next week, that’s all we could ask for,” added the former striker.
