Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane felt Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Cape Town City was a “good game” for fans, and said the key to the result was shutting down their opposition in midfield.
Lebohang Maboe fired Downs in front after 23 minutes, and the hosts held onto their slender advantage as they went into the half-time break. City rallied after half-time, drawing level through a Riyaad Norodien penalty in the 48th minute.
However, Anthony Laffor restored Sundowns’ slender lead on the hour mark, before Phakamani Mahlambi added a third two minutes from time, rendering Kermit Erasmus’ goal in the 90th minute nothing more than a consolation.
Reflecting on the match, Mosimane told SuperSport TV: “It’s always good to have five goals for people who come to the Stadium. It’s a thriller, it’s stress, it’s good. Good game
“I didn’t see the penalty to be honest. I told them at half-time that 1-0 is not going help us, we need a two goal cushion in this game because I know Cape Town City don’t park the bus.
“They play and they will come at us, that’s exactly what they did.”
And Mosimane highlighted the need to nullify the threat posed by Teko Modise and Thato Mokete in the Citizens’ midfield.
He continued: “Credit must go to Benni [McCarthy] his team plays well but we had to shut down the midfield.
“We shut down Teko [Modise] and don’t give Thato Mokete enough time on the ball.
“We closed Teko down hence Benni took him out. He’s a good player and can distribute the balls. ‘Keke’ [Hlompho Kekana] played a little bit stronger on him.”
