Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Morgan Gould questions Muhsin Ertugral’s role in Cape Town City’s relegation.
Gould believes Ertugral’s return to the South African game came at a difficult time for the club, suggesting his methods may not have aligned with the modern needs of players.
The Citizens endured a turbulent 2024/25 season, which began under Eric Tinkler.
A poor run of results led to his departure in December. Ertugral was appointed as a technical advisor and later assumed interim coaching duties.
He made an immediate impact, leading City to consecutive wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. However, that early momentum faded quickly.
Under Ertugral’s leadership, the club registered only one more win before his exit in March.
Cape Town City then turned to coaches Diogo Peral and Roger de Sa for the promotion/relegation play-offs, but the team failed to secure a single victory, resulting in their drop to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
“Football has evolved, and so have players. It’s not just about tactics anymore, today’s players need clarity, confidence, and communication,” said Gould on Switch On Network YouTube Channel as quoted by Panafricafootball.com.
He added that while Ertugral remains a respected figure in South African football, adapting to current dynamics is essential for success.
Cape Town City now face the task of regrouping in the second tier as they aim for a swift return to the Premiership.
Meanwhile, Orbit College have secured promotion after a successful play-off campaign, marking a new chapter for the North West-based club.
