Bafana Bafana and former Orlando Pirates youngster Mohau Nkota believes that his move to Saudi Arabia is a step in the right direction towards accomplishing his dream of playing in top leagues in Europe.
A product of the Pirates DDC, Nkota inked a three-year contract with Al-Ettifaq and wasted no time making his mark, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 win over Al-Kholood. He also celebrated his first national team goal as Bafana triumphed 3-0 over Lesotho on 5 September.
“For me, it was a good start to show myself and what I can do, and scoring is what I want to do in every game that I play. They asked me what I wanted to do for the team, and I said I want to deliver for the team by creating goals, scoring goals and providing assists,” he said while speaking to PrimeSport with Mahlatse.
At just 20, Nkota broke into the senior squad last season, racking up 39 appearances, seven goals, and five assists for the Sea Robbers. His contributions helped propel the team to the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
While the Saudi League often draws seasoned veterans, Nkota is confident in his decision, eager to test himself against global icons like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, and N’golo Kante.
“A lot of people do say that I know. But no, it’s not about the money, it’s a dream, if something comes to you as a footballer, then you must go. Be happy and make yourself happy,” said Nkota.
Nkota believes that going to Saudi Arabia enhances his chances of accomplishing his dream of playing in Europe’s elite league.
“So, for me, it’s about getting that experience and playing with top guys and playing in one of the top leagues. (Saudi Pro League), It is one of the top five leagues,” said Nkota.
“I want to play there and enjoy, but this is not the end of me. For me, this is just a start.
“I want to go to play in one of the biggest leagues in Europe,” Nkota continued.
The Bafana youngster called on other young players not to shy away from following in his footsteps, adding that it’s not only about the money, but there is a lot to learn in competing and sharing the dressing room with experienced footballers.
“I think it is also a good thing for young players to go there. People might think it is for money, but it is not only for money.
“It’s good for young players to play against the experienced players, and after that, if you go to Europe, it might be easier for you to settle and fit in there,” he concluded.
Ettifaq is gearing up for a titanic clash against Al-Ahli on Friday, 12 September, and Nkota is expected to continue with his brilliance and assist the team to challenge for trophies.
