Miguel Cardoso: New signings must earn their place in the starting lineup

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has issued a stern warning to new signings, including Jayden Adams, emphasising that players must earn their place in the team.

Cardoso made it clear that no “gifts” would be handed out, and every player must prove they meet the high standards set by the club.

The coach’s comments come following the signing of Adams on a three-and-a-half-year deal on Saturday.

While the midfielder is regarded as a highly rated player with immense potential, Cardoso stressed that he would not be rushed into the squad despite expectations for him to perform immediately.

Adams, who previously made an impressive 139 appearances in the PSL with Stellenbosch FC, is expected to add significant value to the Sundowns’ midfield.

However, Cardoso’s approach underlines a culture of meritocracy within the squad, ensuring players maintain the club’s exceptional standards.

“We believe in our players and anyone who joins this group has to prove himself. It is for Jayden and anyone else, we won’t give gifts to no one,” Cardoso told the media.

“They will have to rise and show that they are better than all players and then we will see. So, Jayden and anyone joining the group must prove themselves to everyone.

“We are open to discussing and analysing performances daily and the players that perform better and the ones that will go on the pitch. Anyway, we have a lot of competitions and we will give them a chance to adapt and take the best from them.”
