Miguel Cardoso has called for a big-match mentality when Sundowns face Pyramids FC in the decisive second leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final.
The Brazilians were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, despite taking the lead through Lucas Ribeiro in the 54th minute. The visitors struck back in stoppage time courtesy of Walid El Karti, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of the return leg in Cairo.
Cardoso acknowledged the disappointment of conceding late but stressed that his team’s response in tough moments would define their Champions League fate.
“The attitude of champions is seen when things are not going well – when things are beautiful, it’s very easy to be champions,” said the Portuguese tactician after the game.
“Champions show up in difficult situations. We still have 90 minutes to play, and we have the responsibility to score at least one goal.”
Cardoso warned that Sundowns must be prepared for all scenarios in the second leg, including going behind, and insisted that the team must maintain belief and composure throughout.
“Even if they score over there, we need to continue looking for the goal that will equalise the match. A strong mentality will make the difference,” he said.
The Sundowns boss believes the semi-final remains wide open, and that determination and intensity will separate the two sides in Cairo.
“It’s open. They know it’s open. The strongest team in the second match will be the one that wins. The approach will be the same as always. The team that shows more interest and motivation will win the second leg,” he added.
Mamelodi Sundowns, five-time CAF semi-finalists in recent years, will be aiming to raise their performance when they visit 30 June Stadium on 1 June, with a place in the final — and a shot at continental glory — on the line.
