Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has come under scrutiny following his decision to bench veteran midfielder Themba Zwane during the 1-1 draw with Pyramids in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final.
Lucas Ribeiro had given the Brazilians the lead early in the second half, but a stoppage-time header by Walid El Karti saw the visitors snatch a dramatic equaliser, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in Cairo this Sunday.
Supporters and analysts alike questioned why Zwane, widely regarded as Sundowns’ most influential player, did not feature in the high-stakes encounter. Many argued his calm presence and experience could have helped the team maintain composure during the tense final moments.
However, Cardoso defended his selection choices, explaining that tactical balance took precedence.
“Themba, like every player, wants to be on the pitch. But our decisions were based on what we felt would maintain the right structure. We believed the team on the field could get the job done,” said Cardoso after the match.
The Portuguese coach acknowledged the emotional fallout from conceding late but urged perspective, and remains that Sundowns have the tools to secure a win away from home.
“Football can change in seconds. One moment can shift the entire perception of a game and our choices. But we remain focused on the bigger picture,” he continued.
“We have a clear plan. The tie is still open, and we’ll be ready for Cairo.”
The second leg is set for Sunday at the 30 June Stadium, where Sundowns must either win or earn a high-scoring draw to lift the continental crown.
