Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has broken his silence on the absence of star players Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile, and Khuliso Mudau.
This follows their 4-0 MTN8 quarter-final victory over Richards Bay FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
The trio’s omission from the matchday squad raised eyebrows amid growing speculation about their futures at the club. Their absence didn’t derail Masandawana’s momentum, however, as the Brazilians cruised into the semi-finals with a commanding performance.
Iqraam Rayners netted a brace, Siyabonga Mabena added a superb long-range effort, and Richards Bay’s Simphiwe Mcineka scored an own goal to complete a dominant display by the defending Betway Premiership champions.
Sundowns will now face Orlando Pirates in a highly anticipated two-legged semi-final, while the other last-four clash sees Sekhukhune United take on Stellenbosch FC.
Speaking after the match, Cardoso explained that the situations involving the missing players are being handled internally by the club.
“All those things are being sorted out by the club, and I’m sure they will be made public in due time,” said the Portuguese coach.
“I understand what’s happening with Lucas, Peter, and even Thapelo Morena, who missed today’s match due to a minor injury.”
Cardoso also stressed the importance of working with the available squad.
“As a coach, I want the team to be as complete as possible, and I know every coach wants reinforcements early in the season. But this is where we are, and it doesn’t mean we can’t meet our responsibilities. I’m focused on finding solutions, not problems.”
