Mhlongo gives long-term injury update

Former Marumo Gallants FC and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo, who took a long-term break due to an injury, gives an update on his current situation.

In April last year, the 31-year-old Mhlongo had a freak accident damaging his eye while training at Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) and it was reported that he may have retired.

In in an interview with Soccer Laduma, Mhlongo set the record straight saying he has not retired quite yet.

“I haven’t retired because I’m still consulting and getting medical advice,” Mhlongo told Soccer Laduma in Durban.

“For me, it is a case of consulting. I’ve already been to 13 doctors who are saying the same things – that I can’t play football anymore and I’m hoping for miracles, for something to happen.

“If it does happen, I will be glad, Right now I’m still busy with my medical team, I should be able to make a decision soon.”

Mhlongo confirms he has started light training to the first time in over a year.

“I’ve started light training, however, not any goalkeeper training,” Mhlongo said.

“Remember when I got injured, I couldn’t go to the field for over year, I couldn’t even go to gym but I’ve started playing indoor. There’s a big announcement probably in two weeks, we will see.”
