Mfundo Vilakazi feels he is ready to turn out for the Kaizer Chiefs first team after starring in the DStv Diski Challenge for the past few seasons.
The 18-year-old attacker was signed by Amakhosi at the tender age of 15, having impressed for Doornkop Students at the 30th edition of the Philly’s Games.
He was recently called up to the senior side by interim head coach Cavin Johnson and played a part in the 2-1 Carling All-Stars win over Stellenbosch at the weekend.
Reflecting on his growth, an ambitious Vilakazi said on IOL: “Coach Cavin (Johnson) called me to train with the first team so that I can prepare for the Carling All-Stars game against Stellenbosch.
“I think I am ready (for the first team), but (things) won’t always go my own way and when the time is right I will go to the first team and play.”
Amakhosi club captain Itumeleng Khune added that the Diski Challenge provides an excellent challenge for young players.
He explained: “It’s opening doors for everyone that is playing in the DDC and their games are live on TV. They are being watched week in and week out.
“They are playing under a huge crowd when they play the DDC. So it gives them a great opportunity to get recognised by the first-team coaches.
“So they just have to take their careers seriously, follow their hearts and be patient because when the other doors close, the other one opens.”
