Mandla Ncikazi commends Jose Riveiro’s commitment to Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has praised head coach Jose Riveiro’s dedication and long-term vision as a key factor to the club’s success.

Since joining forces in 2022, Riveiro and Ncikazi have led the Buccaneers to two Nedbank Cup titles and three MTN8 trophies, solidifying their status as one of South Africa’s top teams.

As Pirates gear up for their first Soweto derby of the season against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, Ncikazi shared insights into his working relationship with the Spanish tactician.

Ncikazi emphasized the importance of stability in football management, using Stellenbosch FC and coach Steve Barker as an example of how continuity leads to progress.

“Generally, any system that has had time behind it always improves. Look at Stellenbosch FC with Steve Barker—where he started and where he is now. All teams that keep their technical team intact for longer periods tend to perform better,” Ncikazi said during a press conference at Rand Stadium on Tuesday.

He further highlighted how Riveiro’s professional approach has had a positive impact on the entire squad, especially the younger players.

Ncikazi lauded Riveiro’s dedication, noting that his work ethic has raised the club’s standards.

“He works very hard. He arrives here (Rand Stadium) at 8am and puts in the hours. He’s a professional coach who has shown us that coaching isn’t just about two hours on the pitch – it’s about the entire day’s work,” Ncikazi explained.

The assistant coach also pointed out that the blend of Riveiro’s European mentality and his own understanding of African football has been instrumental in shaping Pirates into a formidable force.

“The combination of our experiences—his European perspective and my knowledge of African football has worked well for the club,” Ncikazi concluded.

With the Soweto derby fast approaching, Pirates will be hoping Riveiro’s tactical acumen and commitment to excellence will once again steer them to victory over their arch-rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.
