Mamelodi Sundowns have activated the contract extension clause for left-back Terrence Mashego, amid growing interest from Stellenbosch FC.
Mashego, 29, joined Sundowns in September 2022 and has since made 45 appearances in all competitions. Despite being part of a title-winning squad this season, the former Cape Town City defender has found playing time hard to come by, featuring in just 13 matches under new head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Aubrey Modiba has been Cardoso’s preferred option at left-back, racking up 34 appearances this season. The club has also extended the stay of Zimbabwean full-back Divine Lunga, who played 16 games across all competitions.
Mashego’s limited involvement has reportedly impacted his national team prospects and fuelled speculation about a potential move. Stellenbosch FC, fresh off a semi-final finish in the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup, are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The Western Cape outfit is bracing for potential interest in their star full-back Fawaaz Basadien – reportedly on Sundowns’ radar – and may view Mashego as a ready-made replacement.
Mashego, born in Mamelodi, is said to be open to a move in search of more consistent minutes. The chance to play regular football and feature in continental competition with Stellenbosch could appeal to the roving left-back, whose career has been defined by steady progression through the South African football ranks.
Stellies could also benefit from Mashego’s experience, particularly with young left-back Omega Mdaka still adapting to life in the top flight. The former Kaizer Chiefs academy product made nine starts in his debut campaign with the club.
Back in January, Kaizer Chiefs reportedly made a move for Mashego, but their offer fell short of Sundowns’ valuation – and the club is believed to be reluctant to strengthen a direct rival.
Mashego’s professional journey began with Mthatha Bucks before making his name at TS Galaxy, where he was named Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player. A standout stint at Cape Town City solidified his status as one of the league’s most dynamic left-backs, eventually earning him a move to Chloorkop.
With the contract extension now confirmed, the ball is in Sundowns’ court – but a transfer saga could still unfold ahead of the 2025/26 season.
