Mamelodi Sundowns legend backs Lucas Ribeiro for PSL’s top honour

Mamelodi Sundowns icon Hlompho Kekana has thrown his weight behind Lucas Ribeiro-Costa to win the Footballer of the Season award at the 2024/25 PSL Awards.

Ribeiro-Costa, who enjoyed an outstanding campaign with the Brazilians, ended the season as the Betway Premiership’s top scorer with 16 goals.

His performances were crucial in helping Sundowns clinch an eighth consecutive league title – further strengthening his case for the league’s top individual honour.

He faces stiff competition from Orlando Pirates prodigy Relebohile Mofokeng and Sekhukhune United forward Keletso Makgalwa. However, Kekana, who won the award back in the 2018/19 season, believes the Brazilian’s overall impact puts him ahead.

“For me, Lucas Ribeiro deserves it, no doubt. His contribution last season was phenomenal. You could see his confidence, how he gelled with the squad, and how he made the difference in big moments,” said Kekana in an interview on Radio 2000.

Kekana, now working as an SABC Sport analyst, also had his say on the hotly contested Midfielder of the Season category. This year’s nominees include Sundowns pair Marcelo Allende and Teboho Mokoena, along with Pirates’ Makhehlene Makhaula.

“I’d love to see Marcelo Allende get recognition. He’s consistent, smart, and plays with a level of maturity that many overlook,” he added.

“He might not be flashy, but for those who truly understand football, it’s clear how valuable he is.”

The PSL Awards will be televised live on SABC Sport and SuperSport from 7pm, with fans across the country eager to see who will take home the top accolades.
