Mamelodi Sundowns prodigy Siyabonga Mabena believes the team’s emphatic 3-1 win over Durban City carried deeper meaning than just securing three points.
The reigning champions entered Saturday night’s fixture at Lucas Moripe Stadium with mounting pressure following a disappointing midweek stalemate against Marumo Gallants.

That draw sparked backlash from parts of the Masandawana fanbase, with head coach Miguel Cardoso facing intense scrutiny. Mabena says the Durban City result should mark the beginning of a renewed commitment to the supporters.
The Brazilians were dominant throughout the encounter, reminding their supporters of their quality and ambition.
For 18-year-old Mabena, who came off the bench in the 75th minute to replace Tashreeq Matthews, the win was essential to mend the relationship with their demanding fanbase.
“Everyone was motivated. After the game we played against Gallants, the fans weren’t happy, so we had to push harder. Even in training you could see the determination,” the teenager told the club’s media team.
“The supporters play a huge role for us – when they cheer, we get inspired knowing that we’re playing for them.”
The lively winger also pointed to the sacrifices fans make in showing up week after week.
“They leave their homes, where it’s comfortable, just to support us. That makes it important for us to deliver. Sometimes football doesn’t go our way, but we always try our best,” he said.
The winger believes Saturday’s performance will serve as a springboard heading into their next test – a tough away fixture against Golden Arrows on Wednesday.
“This win gives us confidence. The challenge now is to build on it and keep improving,” added Mabena, who will be heading to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Amajita in Chile later this month.
For Sundowns, the result was more than a victory – it was a statement of intent and a promise to their fans.
