Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso admits Lucas Ribeiro Costa is irreplaceable

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has acknowledged the lasting impact of Lucas Ribeiro Costa, describing him as a player sorely missed.

Costa, last season’s standout performer, often unlocked stubborn defences on his own – something Sundowns struggled with against Arrows.

“Lucas is a wonderful memory for us, but we must now build a new team for the future,” Cardoso told the media after the game.

The Brazilian forward was undoubtedly Sundowns’ best player last season, earning multiple accolades, including PSL Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, and PSL Top Goalscorer. His ability to create and finish chances made him indispensable in key matches.

Costa’s departure was mired in controversy. He took Sundowns to FIFA over a contractual dispute, alleging the club blocked transfer opportunities.

With legal support from Belgian lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont, famous for the Lassana Diarra case, Costa secured a move to Spanish second-division side Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa. It remains unclear whether Sundowns received a transfer fee.

In the aftermath, Cardoso has looked to the Portuguese market to bolster his squad. New signing Nuno Santos impressed off the bench against Arrows, and the club is close to finalising a deal for Miguel Resinhi. But despite these additions, Cardoso insists no one can directly replace Costa.

“No player will substitute Lucas,” he said.

“We are not looking for a replacement, but rather to strengthen the team in a different way. Every player has unique characteristics, and Lucas was very particular.”
