Mamelodi Sundowns close gap to top spot with win over Durban City

Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Durban City in the Bet on Saturday.

The visitors stunned the champions in the 13th minute when Joslin Kamatuka headed home from a Haashim Domingo corner, which took a slight deflection off Arthur Sales.

However, Sundowns responded swiftly. Seven minutes later, Marcelo Allende levelled the score after linking up with Tashreeq Matthews.

Matthews then turned scorer in the 35th minute, converting Iqraam Rayners’ clever assist to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Sundowns nearly added another shortly after, when Aubrey Modiba’s free-kick rattled the crossbar and the rebound efforts from Teboho Mokoena and Rayners were blocked.

Durban City were handed a golden chance to equalise just before half-time after Malibongwe Khoza tugged Trevor Mokwena’s shirt in the box.

Kamatuka stepped up for the penalty, but his effort was superbly saved by Ronwen Williams, a moment that shifted momentum firmly in Sundowns’ favour.

After the break, City’s goalkeeper Darren Keet kept his side in contention with a string of saves to deny Modiba, Mokoena, and Matthews.

Yet Sundowns eventually stretched their advantage in the 65th minute when Rayners grabbed his fifth goal of the season to make it 3-1.

The result lifts Sundowns to 18 points from eight matches, while Durban City remain fourth with 11 points from seven games.
