Mabokgwane: The team matters more than my performance

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane impressed in the 1-1 draw against AmaZulu, but suggested he would have taken three points over his performance.

Mabokgwane came into the team as a late replacement for Siyabonga Mpontshane, who pulled his calf muscle in the pre-game warm-up.

Although he performed well in Umlazi, he was beaten by Emiliano Tade in the 49th minute after Augustine Mulenga had given Pirates the lead in the 14th.

In a video shared on Orlando Pirates’ social media platforms, Mabokgwane reflected on Saturday’s match.

I’m happy with my performance considering that I haven’t played in a while,” he said.

“I’ve been working very hard — preparing myself for that opportunity to come.

“Of course it’s good that I performed. I stand a chance to keep my position in the team — it’s good for myself.

“But more important is the team. I’m 100% for the team first. If we didn’t win the game, for me, personal performances don’t really matter so much.”
