Orlando Pirates winger Luvuyo Memela has cautioned optimism about his side’s chances in the Soweto derby, saying that current form usually goes out of the window in these types of games.
Pirates are looking for their seventh consecutive win in the league and trail their Soweto rivals by just four points heading in to Saturday’s highly-anticipated encounter at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
But ‘Amigo’, who has contributed three assists in ten league games, believes his side can ill-afford to be complacent about their chances.
“We are trying so hard to be consistent as much as we can, winning six in a row doesn’t mean anything because we haven’t had trophies in the past in 4,5,6 years, I think the last one was in 2014 if I am not mistaken,” said Memela, referring to their Nedbank Cup success against Bidvest Wits in 2014.
“It is going to be a big game because we know that Chiefs is on top. What’s important is that we continue with our form, we keep fighting for three points.”
When asked if the Buccanneers had one eye on the title with the Derby in mind, the 28-year-old responded:
“No, we are just going to focus on the game in hand…all we need to do is to ensure that we get the three points, when you play for a big team you must always fight that’s what we need to do.
“Everybody is excited, at times the coach [Josef Zinnbauer] would have to stop a season session in order for us to listen to him and take it easy and not use all our energy unnecessarily and try and wait for the Derby.”
