Lucas Ribeiro Costa committed to Mamelodi Sundowns despite overseas interest

Lucas Ribeiro Costa has a number of suitors after a superb season with Mamelodi Sundowns, says the player’s agent.

The 26-year-old Brazilian striker joined the Betway Premiership leaders from Belgian side SK Beveren at the start of last season.

He has gone on to play 71 times, scoring 33 goals and creating 20. This season he has 17 goals in 31 games, alongside 11 assists.

While he remains a relative unknown in his home country, Costa has made a name for himself due to his performances in the Premiership and is now being coveted by numerous local and international clubs.

Speaking to iDiski Times, the player’s representative said: “The immediate goals right now is the CAF Champions League, and Club World Cup for now and after that we will see what happens, but for now that is the only thing on Lucas’ mind, to do as best as he can to win for Sundowns.

“He’s happy in South Africa, who can’t see what happens in the future, he is really committed to helping Sundowns win the Champions League and compete at the FIFA Club World Cup. Now is not the time to think about his future, it’s not the end of his career.

“As you can imagine, for a player like Lucas, my phone has been ringing non-stop this season but what is important is for Lucas to be happy, to play at a club that suits him, that wins trophies and he is so happy to be here at Sundowns, even yesterday he said the same thing.”
