Love him or Hate him: Samkelo Zwane Embraces Fan Criticism as a fuel for improvement at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Samkelo Zwane has spoken openly about the criticism he has received from supporters, acknowledging that it comes from a place of passion and high expectations for the team.

Rather than viewing it negatively, the young midfielder embraces it as motivation to refine his game and prove himself at Amakhosi.

At just 23 years old, Zwane was elevated to the senior squad in 2023 under then Kaizer Chiefs boss Arthur Zwane, amid considerable anticipation.

Like Zwane, many fans saw him as a promising talent capable of making an immediate impact.

That being said, securing a consistent spot in the starting lineup has proven challenging, with Zwane finding himself in a competitive midfield unit featuring established players such as Thabo Cele, Gaston Sirino, Yusuf Maart, and Njabulo Blom.

While Zwane has seen limited action, several of his peers from the club’s development ranks, Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, and Mfundo Vilakazi, have continued to get minutes, further intensifying competition within the squad.

Despite featuring in only 11 league matches this season, Zwane remains determined to earn more playing time. He understands the pressures that come with playing for a club of Kaizer Chiefs’ stature, where supporters demand results and hold players to high standards.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Zwane expressed his appreciation for the support he has received, even in moments of criticism.

“My relationship with the supporters, I’m just grateful and appreciative of the support they’ve shown me and the way I play football,” he said.

“I also love them. Sometimes they criticise me, but it’s out of love, not hate. I think we have a good relationship.”

As Zwane continues to develop, he hopes to carve out a more prominent role in the team and justify the faith placed in him by coaches and fans alike.

His attitude towards criticism reflects resilience and a willingness to grow, traits that could ultimately serve him well as he strives for success in South African football.

With the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season entering its final stretch, Zwane is aiming to work his way back into coach’s plans and prove his value to the team.
