Living Large: Durban City Boss Gavin Hunt Happy with Unbeaten Start

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt is pleased with his team’s start to the Betway Premiership season, which has seen the newly promoted side remain undefeated after three matches.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship winners began their campaign with a solid 2-0 win over TS Galaxy, followed by a 1-0 victory against Chippa United. Their perfect record was halted on Tuesday when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Golden Arrows.

A Point Earned

In the KZN derby, Durban City took the lead in the 10th minute through an own goal by Arrows winger Jerome Karlese.

That being said, Golden Arrows leveled the score just before halftime with a strike from Junior Dion. Both teams had opportunities to win in the second half but ultimately had to settle for a point each.

Focused on the Future

Speaking after the match, Hunt admitted that while he would have preferred a win against Arrows, he’s happy with the seven points his team has collected.

“If you said it at the beginning [that I would take seven points] I would take it, but we have to try to get as many as we can before we start playing the big hitters,” he said.

Hunt believes his squad will improve as the season progresses and the new players fully integrate into the team. Their next challenge is a pair of tough away games in Limpopo against Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United.

“We will get better, there is no doubt, a lot of new players are coming,” Hunt said. He acknowledged the logistical challenge of playing two back-to-back away games but remained optimistic.

“We will dust ourselves off and go again and try to approach those two games, but we will worry about that when we get there.”

Durban City’s next match is against Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Kick-off is set for 19h30.
