KeYonaYaRona: Mashego Driven to Repeat Cup Success After Joining Durban City

Durban City defender Terrence Mashego says the Nedbank Cup trophy would be a welcome reward for a strong debut season in the South African top-flight.

The rebranded team, formally operating as Maritzburg City before their move to Durban, secure their place in the Betway Premiership as winners of the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship.

They are currently in an impressive fifth place on the league standings, just two points adrift of AmaZulu in third place.

But next up for Coach Pitso Dladla’s team is Nedbank Cup semi-final with National First Division side Casric Stars at the weekend, and Mashego has challenged his teammates to secure their final place – against one of TS Galaxy or Milford FC.

“We’ve done pretty well so far this season, so I believe we need to reward ourselves with the Nedbank Cup. There are still players here experiencing the Premiership for the first time, and this is a major opportunity for them to win silverware,” said the player.

Mashego is a Nedbank Cup winner, having lifted the trophy with TS Galaxy after a famous win over Kaizer Chiefs.

But he has against complacency ahead of facing a Stars team that secured their semi-final place with wins over Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu.

“They are dangerous from set-pieces and on the counter-attack; they are a complete team. We simply have to bring our A-game,” added Mashego.

“I think we also owe it to our fans, especially at Chatsworth. They’ve been there every week, so it would be fantastic to close the season with the Nedbank Cup.

“I know it’s possible because I’ve done it before with TS Galaxy. We just need to believe,” he said.
