Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has apologised to his club after an erratic performance in the Champions League final cost his side against Real Madrid.
Karius, who this season overtook Simon Mignolet as the Reds’ first choice goalkeeper, handed Karim Benzema an easy goal that broke the deadlock in Saturday’s final in Kiev.
The German shot stopper also let a long-range strike by Gareth Bale slip through his hands for Madrid’s third goal of the match, the Spanish giants winning 3-1 with Bale opening his account with a fantastic bicycle-kick.
Karius immediately issued an apology after the game, admitting that his two mistakes ended Liverpool’s dream of winning their second Champions League title in 13 years.
Karius told reporters after the final: “Today I lost my team the game and I feel sorry for everyone – from the team, from the whole club – that the mistakes cost dearly.
“If I could go back in time, I would. I feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down today. These goals cost us the title basically.
“Its very hard right now, but that the life of a goalkeeper. You have to get your head up again.”
He said his teammates were supporting but were naturally all disappointed to have lost the match.
Karius added: “Of course everyone tried to cheer me up.
“But there was just silence everywhere because everyone was really disappointed.”
