Kaizer Chiefs legend reacts as Brandon Petersen breaks 47-year clean-sheet record

Kaizer Chiefs legend Joseph “Banks” Setlhodi has applauded Brandon Petersen after the current Amakhosi number one broke his long-standing clean-sheet record.

Petersen has started the 2025/26 season in superb form, keeping five consecutive clean sheets – a feat last achieved by Setlhodi 47 years ago.

“It’s a good thing that the record has been broken. It makes me happy to see that we still have achievers out there. This shows there is improvement in that department,” Setlhodi told Kick-Off.

The former shot-stopper, however, stressed that Petersen still has more to prove if he is to truly establish himself as Chiefs’ leading man between the posts.

“It’s special that my record has been broken by someone who started off very slow and weak. He can become a good goalkeeper if he starts believing he is a Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper – then he will truly excel,” Setlhodi said.

“No club has ever become successful without a good goalkeeper. Petersen still has to prove himself. A Chiefs goalkeeper leads the team, marshals the squad, and shows consistency. Most importantly, he must show he is not willing to concede goals.”

Petersen’s next big test comes on 16 September, when Chiefs face high-flying Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium.
