Kaizer Chiefs Latest News: Reneilwe Letsholonyane says former Amakhosi midfielder was a big part of his decision to join Matebele FC

Reneilwe Letsholonyane, the former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star, has embarked on a new chapter in his football career, taking the helm as the head coach of Botswana Premier League side Matebele FC.

In a recent interview with FARPost, Letsholonyane revealed that his long-time friend and former teammate, Siphiwe Tshabalala, played a pivotal role in his decision to take on his first professional coaching role.

According to Letsholonyane, Tshabalala was not only involved in the discussions from the very beginning but also provided crucial advice and support throughout the negotiation process.

Letsholonyane shared his deep appreciation for their bond, stating that they have moved past friendship to become like brothers.

“I’m happy and grateful to have him in my life, obviously as a brother. We have passed the friendship phase; we regard each other as brothers.

“It was a good feeling that he was involved in this move. He has been part of the conversation since it started. So, being here with me, witnessing the historic moment of my life and the final product that we have been working on together,” – Yeye said.

Tshabalala’s guidance was instrumental, particularly when Letsholonyane faced challenges during the negotiations. Tshabalala’s approach was to present the obstacles and then empower Letsholonyane to make his own informed decision.

“He knows that I love being in the coaching space. So, while we were still in the negotiation stage regarding me coming to this side [Botswana], there were a few challenges.

What he would do is say, ‘Here are the challenges, and you decide for yourself if this is a challenge that you can overcome, and then we can see what we can do about it’.

“Also, wherever he can, he would give me his thoughts, and in the end, obviously, I’m the one who has to make a decision. But whatever decision I make, he will then support it in full force,” he concluded.

This guidance, coupled with Tshabalala’s unwavering support for whatever decision Letsholonyane ultimately made, solidified their partnership in this significant career move.

Letsholonyane’s debut as Matebele FC’s head coach took place on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Royal Aria Stadium. His side narrowly lost 1-0 to Black Lions FC, a team coached by fellow South African Owen Da Gama.

Despite the loss, Letsholonyane is optimistic about the future and is grateful for the continued support from Tshabalala as he begins this new chapter.
