Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye has slammed referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa, alleging that Stellenbosch were unfairly treated in their Nedbank Cup quarter-final loss.
The controversy arose when Pule Mmodi’s goal was initially disallowed by the assistant referee for what appeared to be a foul on Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
However, after consulting with his assistant, the referee overturned the decision and awarded the goal to Chiefs.
Amakhosi went on to secure a 3-1 victory, with Mfundo Vilakazi adding a third goal to seal their place in the semi-finals.
Khanye was left disappointed, stating that the officials were unfair to Steve Barker’s side and that Stellenbosch has been on the receiving end of questionable officiating multiple times. Despite his support for Chiefs, he believes they did not win fairly.
“Daylight robbery from the referee; that was very disappointing,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.
“I know Kaizer Chiefs fans are happy, and I’m happy for their technical team, their players, and the supporters. But winning this way…I’m not happy about it.”
With their place in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals secured, Chiefs will now shift their focus back to the Betway Premiership as they prepare to face Cape Town City at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
