Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has reflected on the significance of the Soweto Derby and its impact on South African football.

This will be Riveiro’s last derby at FNB Stadium as he is set to part ways with the Buccaneers at the end of the season following a successful spell with the club.

He will have a chance to add another trophy to their cabinet when his side takes on Amakhosi in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May.

His side claimed victory in the last derby winning 1-0 thanks to a penalty by Patrick Maswanganyi in the dying minutes of the game.

During the press conference before the match, Riveiro discussed the importance of the Derby and how South African football has influenced his life.

“Personally, it has changed my life. I am impressed with the league- not only my players. It’s nice to have such talented players. I tell them all the time that they make me happy having to manage such talent,” he said as quoted by the club’s website.

We are looking for victory. That’s important for us and the fans. We need to get back on track.”

“We understand the responsibility — we are a winning team.” As the coach prepares for his final league Derby at the iconic venue, the Spaniard shared a heartfelt message:

“This is my last derby at FNB. It’s a special place — not only for me but for the players as well.” he concluded.
