Orlando Pirates have demonstrated their commitment and resilience by securing the top spot in CAF Champions League Group C after a convincing 3-0 victory.
The match, played at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening, saw goals from Relebohile Mofokeng, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Deon Hotto.
Coach Jose Riveiro praised his players for their dedication over the festive period, noting, “It’s about ambitions, it’s about dedication, it’s about commitment. We went through a difficult month but you have to show that you are still a professional football player at the time that everybody is having festive days, having parties and fun.”
He emphasized the team’s focus on their goals, even during times when others might be distracted.
The Buccaneers have shown impressive form not only in continental competition but also in the domestic league, where they crushed Marumo Gallants 8-1 on Christmas Eve. This performance has solidified their reputation as a formidable team both at home and abroad.
Looking ahead, Pirates are set to host Algerian side CR Belouizdad in their next Champions League match at Orlando Stadium on Sunday.
However, before that, they must navigate a trip to Cape Town City FC for a Betway Premiership encounter on Wednesday.
Currently, Pirates lead Group C with eight points from four matches, just one point ahead of Al Ahly.
Riveiro expressed pride in the team’s achievements, particularly highlighting the involvement of young talents from the club’s development program. “We are learning, like I said many times… again today, we finished the game with five players from our DDC team but they are accumulating these experiences in order to understand what it takes to play at this level,” he stated.
He further added, “It’s something nice and it’s something to feel proud of and we are proud because we are working for it…nobody is giving us anything for free.”
This work ethic and focus on youth development continue to be cornerstones of Pirates’ strategy as they aim to maintain their lead in the group.
With no new significant developments related to Pirates since the last match, the team’s immediate focus will be on maintaining their form and momentum as they tackle both domestic and international challenges.
