Italian Serie A Preview

It rained goals in the Serie A last gameweek as only AC Milan and Empoli failed to get on the scoresheet. Fiorentina thrashed Inter Milan 4-1 in front of their own fans. Roma ran riot embarrassing new boys Carpi 5-1, whilst Sassuolo remain the only unbeaten team in the league after settling for a point against Chievo but face a tricky trip to Empoli at the weekend. Juventus fell to yet another defeat, as Napoli claimed a consecutive home win. Six games in and Juventus have managed just one victory compared to their six out of six last term. What has become of the Old Lady; have the Italian giants finally fallen or can they get back on track and defend their title for a fifth consecutive season.

Saturday 3rd October

Carpi 5/2 | Draw 22/10 | Torino 12/10

Carpi failed yet again in their attempt to record their first ever Serie A victory as Roma humiliated the newcomers with a 5-1 whipping. It extends their winless run to six matches; where they have scored just six goals, conceding 15 times – the most in the league. Torino come to town off the back of a 2-1 home win against Palermo, making it four wins out of six and the European hopefuls are now just two points off the top spot. Carpi must win to take some pressure off the team as survival will be all that matters now. However, Torino haven’t been shy with goals and if the home side go all out, they could be caught out with sweeping counter-attacks. Go with the away win.

Chievo 21/20 | Draw 23/10 | Hellas Verona 28/10

Chievo return to their home patch after earning a hard fought 1-1 draw at Sassuolo to keep their away record unscathed. They have done well on their turf, winning twice out of three games, scoring five goals and conceding just once. Verona will be looking for their first victory of the new campaign when they visit Chievo on Saturday evening. They went down 2-1 at home against Lazio last time out, making it back-to-back defeats. It’s been a dreadful start to the new season for the away team and they will be hoping to find their rhythm, starting with a victory here. However, five goals in six games leaves a lot to be desired and Chievo are tipped to claim maximum points.

Sunday 4th October

Empoli 15/10 | Draw 22/10 | Sassuolo 18/10

Empoli fell to a 2-0 defeat on Monday night away to newly-promoted Frosinone – making it their fourth loss in six league games. They are yet to win on their ground, scoring only three times and conceding double that amount. Sassuolo will look to take advantage of Empoli’s defensive frailties. They remain unbeaten with three wins and three draws from six games.  They also have an impressive record against Empoli, losing just once in the last 10 meetings. At 18/10 Sassuolo look too good a bet to pass up.

Palermo 3/1 | Draw 5/2 | Roma 9/10

Palermo have been poor in recent weeks with three losses on the trot. To make matters worse, Roma are up next, and they come around in red-hot form after demolishing Carpi 5-1 on their ground. However, Palermo won’t want to let Roma walk all over them and could put up a worthy challenge, especially in front of their home faithful. They are unbeaten against Roma in the last three meetings but that is likely to change here. Palermo’s form has been terrible, and following their last three meetings against Roma would just be foolish given the quality in which Roma posses. It should be a tight encounter but Roma are tipped to do the job and come away with the victory.

Sampdoria 29/10 | Draw 24/10 | Inter Milan 19/20

Sampdoria lost a consecutive away game going down 2-1 to Atalanta on Monday night. However, they return to their fortress where they have been brilliant with three wins from three games, scoring nine goals and conceding only three times. Inter Milan come into this one off the back of a horrific display, going down 4-1 on their turf against Fiorentina, forfeiting top spot to the latter. Prior to that defeat, Inter had the best defensive record in the league, conceding just once and the Milan based club will need to get back to their best if they are to get any result here. The sides are tipped to cancel each other out.

Udinese 5/4 | Draw 22/10 | Genoa 9/4

Udinese returned to winning ways with a well-deserved 2-1 victory away to newly promoted Bologna. They were on a four game losing streak prior to that win and hopefully that victory will give them confidence against Genoa who are flying high after their hard fought 1-0 home win against AC Milan last weekend. While Udinese have lost all their matches on their ground, Genoa have been just as poor on their travels. Udinese are 13th on the log and Genoa are placed 14th; with the former scoring three goals more. However, Genoa have been better defensively, and are tipped to earn a point.

Juventus 1/4 | Draw 42/10 | Bologna 11/1

One win, two draws and three defeats is how Juventus’ form currently reads. The league champions looked to be turning a point just a fortnight ago but a home draw against newcomers Frosinone, followed by a 2-1 defeat last time out at Napoli has halted them in their tracks. Bologna would usually be a walk in the park for Juve, but judging by their horrid form at present, nothing seems cut and dry. However, the new boys have not fared any better, losing five of their six matches, including all three of their games on the road. The Old Lady need to make an example out of their opponents and get their title defensive back on track. Juve are tipped at 1/4 for the win but adding Over 2.5 Goals gets you a decent price of 9/10 on the Matchbet + Total Goals.

Lazio 3/10 | Draw 9/2 | Frosinone 9/1

Lazio have been impressive of late with back-to-back victories. Their home form has been terrific, winning all three matches, scoring six goals and conceding just once. Federico Dionisi scored twice as Frosinone beat Empoli 2-0 to record their first ever Serie A victory. This coming after Frosinone earned a hard-fought and well-deserved 1-1 draw in their last away match against Italian giants Juventus. The team might be high on confidence but so too are their opponents. Lazio have more momentum with them and look worth a punt but given Frosinone’s current form, I’m predicting a Lazio victory with Both Teams To Score at a valuable 18/10.

AC Milan 7/4 | Draw 24/10 | Napoli 31/20

This week’s biggest contest sees AC Milan lock horns with Napoli at the San Siro Stadium. Milan have struggled to maintain winning form thus far, winning three and losing three of their six matches. They fell to a 1-0 loss away to Genoa at the weekend and will look to return to winning ways here. Napoli will be high on confidence after their 2-1 victory over champions Juventus last weekend, stretching their unbeaten run to five matches. However, they are winless on the road, drawing twice and losing their opening match at Sassuolo. Nevertheless, they do have the momentum with them at present and Napoli are tipped on the Draw No Bet at 8/10.

Fiorentina 13/20 | Draw 11/4 | Atalanta 42/10

Nikola Kalinic scored a hat-trick as Fiorentina thumped 10-man Inter Milan 4-1 on Sunday. The win, Fiorentina’s fifth of the campaign, has lifted the Viola to the top of the standings, level with Inter on 15 points but ahead on goal difference. Atalanta have looked quite impressive of late and remain unbeaten since their opening day defeat away to Inter Milan. They will be looking for a third consecutive win when they travel to Fiorentina. However, the Viola have won the last seven meetings against Atalanta and are tipped to claim maximum points with Both Teams To Score at 27/10.
