Ishmael Maluleke predicts Peter Shalulile will keep PSL top scorer crown for five years

Former PSL Golden Boot winner Ishmael Maluleke believes that Peter Shalulile’s record as the league’s all-time top scorer is unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

Shalulile, the Namibian international, recently overtook Kaizer Chiefs legend Siyabonga Nomvethe, reaching 130 goals and cementing his place in PSL history.

Nomvethe, who retired in 2018, remains second on the list with 101 Grobler, currently in fine form, trails Shalulile by only seven goals, sparking conversations about whether the record is under threat.

Despite the narrow gap, Maluleke, who won the Golden Boot with Manning Rangers in the 2001/02 season after scoring 18 goals, is confident the PSL goal king’s record will remain untouched for at least five years.

He pointed to Grobler’s age and injury history as key factors limiting his chances of catching Shalulile.

“It’s not going to be easy to catch Shalulile. 130 goals is a big record,” Maluleke told FARPost.

“Grobler has been in the league for a long time and is over 30. If he were younger, he might have had a chance. But with injuries and recovery periods, I see Shalulile staying at the top for the next five years.”

Maluleke also praised the current crop of top scorers in the PSL, noting that their form is good for the league and fans.

“It’s impressive that strikers are finding the back of the net. Supporters always want to see goals, whether from their club or an opponent. Having two top seasonal scorers now makes the league very exciting and keeps fans engaged,” he added.

With Shalulile’s consistency and Grobler’s chase, the PSL continues to showcase striking talent while keeping supporters glued to the action every week.
