Iqraam Rayners says good form is down to strong bond at Stellies

Iqraam Rayners says his good form at Stellenbosch is down to a strong relationship with head coach Steve Barker.

The 27-year-old has been hitting the highs with Stellies this season after netting an impressive 15 goals in 28 appearances in the second half of last term in all competitions.

Presently, Rayners has five goals in 16 games, and netted most recently in the 3-0 DStv Premiership defeat of Cape Town Spurs last time out.

He also scored twice in the league against this weekend’s Carling Knockout Cup semi-final opponents Richards Bay.

Rayner’s form is in stark contrast to his time with SuperSport United, whom he joined from Stellies, where he was largely used as a bit-part player.

Reflecting on his performances since making a return, the player explained on iDiski Times: “Nothing changed – there [at] Supersport United I did not get much opportunity and I’m happy to be back here because myself and Coach Steve, we always communicated and I’m happy to be back in I’m happy to score goals.”

Rayners scooped two back-to-back Carling Knockout Challenge man of the match awards for his previous two appearances to earn R100 000 at a time.

But he says money is not the motivating factor leading up to their next clash.

“No, don’t add motivation, actually adds motivation to the team because I want them to do good,” Rayners said.

“You never know someone else might get it also so not about me alone. It’s about the team.”
