The long-running transfer saga surrounding Mario Gotze has finally come to an end, with the Bayern Munich midfielder sealing a return to former club Borussia Dortmund on Thursday.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year contract after an initial fee of £18.3m was agreed by the two clubs in question.

In a statement published on the club’s official website, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “The negotiations were very fair and serious.

“We’d like to thank Borussia Dortmund, Mario, his father as well as his agent for that.

“I think the transfer is a good solution for all parties. FC Bayern thanks Mario Gotze for three years wearing the Bayern shirt and wishes him all the best for the future.”

In his three seasons with Bayern, Gotze made 73 Bundesliga appearances, bagging 22 goals in the process.
