Going Up: Late Penalty Drama Denies Cape Town City Crucial Win in PSL Playoffs

Cape Town City were dealt a frustrating blow in their quest to retain Betway Premiership status, as Casric Stars secured a dramatic 1-1 draw with a late equalizer in their PSL Relegation/Promotion Playoff match.

The Citizens, who had led for much of the game, were just moments away from a vital victory when the Stars capitalized on a stoppage-time penalty.

The match, crucial for both teams’ ambitions, saw Cape Town City start with clear intent. Their early pressure paid off in the 27th minute when Prins Tjiueza found the back of the net, giving the top-flight side a valuable lead.

Prior to the goal, veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet was instrumental in preserving City’s advantage, making crucial saves to thwart Casric Stars’ Decide Chauke on multiple occasions.

As the second half unfolded, Cape Town City pushed to extend their lead, with players like Jaedin Rhodes and Siphamandla Dondolo attempting to break through the Casric Stars defense.

Nevertheless, the home side remained a persistent threat, with Chauke continuing to be a thorn in the Citizens’ side, constantly probing their backline.

The relentless pressure from Casric Stars finally paid dividends in the most dramatic fashion. Deep into stoppage time, in the 90+7th minute, the referee pointed to the spot, awarding Casric Stars a penalty.

Decide Chauke, who had been a menace throughout the match, stepped up and calmly converted from 12 yards, sending Keet the wrong way and leveling the score. This late strike snatched two crucial points away from Cape Town City, denying them a much-needed win.

This result leaves both Cape Town City and Casric Stars with a single point in the mini-league format of the playoffs. Both teams had previously drawn their respective matches against Orbit College.

Consequently, Orbit College currently leads the playoff table with two points, setting up a tense finale for the remaining fixtures as all three teams vie for a spot in the South African top flight.

Next up for Cape Town City is a clash with Orbit College. Kick off at Olympia Park Stadium is set for 15h00 on Wednesday, 25 June 2025.

On the other hand, Casric Stars will be up against Orbit College this weekend. Kick off at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium is set for 15h00 on Saturday, 21 June 2025.
