Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze says hard work will be the only ingredient that can help the club retain their Carling Knockout Cup title this season.
Dikwena tsa Meetse begin their title defence on Sunday against AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
After a slow start to their Betway Premiership campaign, where they have managed just one win in nine matches, Chipezeze believes success in the cup could inspire a turnaround.
“The defending champion tag doesn’t mean anything if we don’t put in the effort,” said the keeper this week.
“This is a new challenge with new players in the squad. Pressure will always be there, but we need to show our supporters that we’re willing to work hard. AmaZulu are experienced, they’re playing at home, and they will fight – so we can’t relax.”
Magesi followed a similar path last season, struggling in the league but finding momentum in the Carling Cup, where they upset several top-flight teams on their way to lifting the trophy. Chipezeze hopes lightning can strike twice.
“We started last year away to Orlando Pirates, and this time we start in Durban against AmaZulu. Again, we’re coming off setbacks in the league. But we’ll treat this game as both a cup challenge and preparation for upcoming Premiership fixtures,” he explained.
Chipezeze was a standout performer for Magesi in last season’s Carling Cup, with his display being instrumental in Magesi’s success at the tournament.
The keeper further walked with R400 000 after being named man-of-the-match four times. He says having done so well now comes with a lot of expectations.
“Of course, there’s pressure to maintain those standards. But you can’t rely on what you did last season. You must keep working. Hard work, hunger, and desire – that’s the only way we can defend this title,” he added.
