Among the new faces is Brooklyn Poggenpoel, who will be reuniting with City’s recently appointed head coach, Gavin Hunt. Poggenpoel previously played under Hunt at SuperSport United before the club was sold.
Durban City has also secured the services of veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet. The experienced shot stopper, who was recently released by relegated Cape Town City at the end of last season, brings a wealth of experience to the newly promoted side.
Further bolstering their ranks, City has signed Trevor Mokwena from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City, and talented Ghanaian international goalkeeper Fredrick Asare.
These strategic signings are a crucial part of Durban City’s preparations for their upcoming Betway Premiership campaign.
The club earned its promotion by clinching the Motsepe Foundation Championship title last season, marking a significant achievement in their history.
Following their promotion, they made a high-profile appointment in Gavin Hunt, who had been unattached since his departure from SuperSport United in March.
Hunt and his new-look squad will get their first taste of competitive action this coming weekend in the KZN Premier’s Cup in Richards Bay. Durban City is scheduled to face Milford FC in a playoff match this weekend. Kick off at the Umhlathuze Stadium is set for 14h00 on Saturday, 26 July 2025.
The victorious team from that encounter will advance to the semi-finals on Sunday, where they will come up against the winner of the other Saturday playoff between local PSL outfits Golden Arrows and AmaZulu.
The KZN Premier’s Cup will provide an early test for Durban City’s new additions and a valuable opportunity for Coach Hunt to assess his squad ahead of the challenging Betway Premiership season.
