Sekhukhune United centre-back Daniel Cardoso has thrown his support behind teammate Keletso Makgalwa as a leading candidate for the PSL Player of the Season.
His endorsement comes amid the league’s decision to postpone its end-of-season awards due to Mamelodi Sundowns’ involvement in both the CAF Champions League final and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Cardoso praised Makgalwa’s outstanding contributions during the 2024–25 Betway Premiership campaign and urged club management to secure the 28-year-old forward on a long-term deal to fend off interest from rival clubs.
“He [Makgalwa] is a good player. I am glad that Sekhukhune gave him another chance because I know that he was struggling a little bit,” Cardoso told Sowetan.
“He didn’t get that break [after leaving Sundowns in September 2023, spending the better part of his stint at Chloorkop out on loan at teams such as Maritzburg United, Moroka Swallows and TS Galaxy among other teams], and now he’s taken that break and he has turned it into something big.
“I am sure he’ll be among the Player of the Season candidates. He had a phenomenal season for us. The club needs to tie him down.”
Makgalwa, who joined Sekhukhune from second-tier outfit Upington City at the beginning of the season, has made a significant impact.
The Mokopane-born attacker, a product of Mamelodi Sundowns’ development system and a senior debutant under Pitso Mosimane in 2018, has played 26 league matches, scoring four goals and providing 11 assists – the most in the division.
His stellar form earned him the Player of the Month accolade for April, and he remains a fan favourite in ongoing discussions about award contenders despite the delay.
