Daine Klate: Gavin Hunt still has a lot to offer SA football

Daine Klate has thrown his support behind Gavin Hunt ahead of the coach’s 1,000th professional match, insisting that he remains a key figure in SA football.

Hunt will reach the milestone on Sunday when SuperSport United face Golden Arrows at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

His journey in football management began at Hellenic, and he has since led clubs such as Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, Kaizer Chiefs, and Bidvest Wits, where he secured his fourth PSL title.

Over 999 matches, Hunt has recorded 416 wins, 287 draws, and 296 losses, along with multiple domestic cup successes.

His ability to develop talent remains evident, with Shandre Campbell recently securing a move to Belgian club Club Brugge KV under Hunt’s mentorship.

Despite the challenges this season, Hunt’s impact on South African football is undeniable, and his 1,000th match marks another chapter in an already storied career.

“I think it [the criticism] is exaggerated. When I look at the modern game, it is more about the technical team than the individual coach. There is more structure, more people with roles and responsibilities,” he said.

“Coach Gavin has a world of experience and that is one thing you can’t buy. I don’t think he is going to get out of the game soon. He can go on for as long as he likes.

“SuperSport have been unlucky with injuries this season. I believe he has a lot to offer. He can impart of lot of knowledge and produce a lot of players,” Klate concluded.
