Tanzanian powerhouse Young Africans SC has officially unveiled Romain Folz, the former AmaZulu head coach and Mamelodi Sundowns assistant, as their new head coach.
The announcement, made at the club’s headquarters this week, ends weeks of anticipation surrounding the leadership of the reigning Tanzanian champions.
Folz steps into the role previously held by Miloud Hamdi, who recently moved to Egyptian Premier League side Ismaily.

At just 35 years old, Folz brings an impressive resume to Yanga, including a prestigious UEFA Pro Licence and a rapidly rising reputation across African football.
His appointment underscores Yanga’s clear ambition: to not only maintain their domestic supremacy but also to launch a formidable challenge in the upcoming 2025/26 CAF Champions League campaign.
Yanga enjoyed a sensational 2024/25 season, securing a clean sweep of domestic silverware by clinching both the Tanzanian Premier League title and the Community Shield.
With their local dominance firmly established, the club is now setting its sights on continental glory, with a CAF Champions League semi-final berth identified as a key target under Folz’s guidance.
Sources close to the club indicate that Folz has penned a two-year contract with an option for a third, a testament to the long-term vision Yanga has for their new coach.
His selection followed a rigorous process, with Folz emerging as the preferred candidate over several other high-profile contenders, including Rulani Mokwena, who has since taken the helm at MC Alger, and ASEC Mimosas coach Julien Chevalier.
Adding significant weight to Folz’s appointment was a glowing recommendation from none other than Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development.
Yanga President Hersi Ally Said reportedly received the endorsement from Wenger, who had previously worked with Folz during the FIFA High Performance Development programme, highlighting the young coach’s potential and expertise.
In his inaugural address as head coach, Folz expressed his excitement and outlined his ambitious vision for the club. “I’m honoured to lead Yanga,” he stated.
“This is a club with a rich history and passionate fans. Our goal is to maintain our domestic success and make a serious impact on the continental stage with a high-energy, attacking style of play.”
His words resonate with the club’s desire to combine their recent winning ways with an exciting brand of football, promising an intriguing era for the Jangwani Street giants.
