Mamelodi Sundowns are just one point away from sealing their 18th South African topflight title as they gear up to face Chippa United later this evening.
The clash marks their second meeting in a week, following Sundowns’ emphatic 3-0 victory over the Chilli Boys in their previous encounter.
Form Guide
Masandawana sit 15 points clear at the summit of the Betway Premiership, chasing a record-extending eighth consecutive title. Under the guidance of head coach Miguel Cardoso, Sundowns have found imperious form, winning their last four league matches and netting 11 goals in the process.
Their most recent outing was a commanding 3-0 win over Stellenbosch at the weekend. “Obviously, be honest in the way we play the next two matches and it’s a big responsibility that we have ahead,” said Cardoso.
“Regarding more than that, I would like to leave it for the moment that we really become champions, because at the moment there’s no time for that.”
Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is expected to be available again, offering a further boost to an already dominant side. Their last defeat came at the hands of title challengers Orlando Pirates, but since then, Sundowns have looked unstoppable.
In stark contrast, Chippa United are enduring a worrying slump, having failed to win any of their last five league fixtures. Still clinging to eighth place – the final MTN8 qualification spot – they are level on points with Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants, separated only by their superior goal difference.
Coach Thabo September’s squad remains depleted in midfield. Siphelo Baloni has been out since sustaining an injury against Richards Bay in March, while Andile Jali has not featured since February. Speaking after their 3-0 defeat to Stellenbosch on 30 April, September provided little optimism regarding their return.
How to watch
The match is scheduled to kick-off at 19:30 on Wednesday, 14 May and will be carried live on the public broadcaster’s radio stations for commentary. The match will be broadcast live on satellite TV giants SuperSport channel 202 and can be streamed on Showmax.
Buffalo City Municipality Stadium
The 16 000 seater stadium will host the clash between Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns. Located in East London, the stadium serves as the home ground for the Border Bulldogs rugby team and Chippa United FC in the Premier Soccer League.
In 2024, the stadium underwent significant upgrades to meet PSL standards. These enhancements included the installation of a new drainage system, improved seating, and upgraded amenities. Following a thorough inspection by PSL officials, the stadium was approved to host South African topflight football matches.

To win (90 min)
Chippa United 15/2 | Draw 28/10 | Mamelodi Sundowns 4/10
With their Betway Premiership coronation on the cards, I think Masandawana will be too strong for Chippa tonight.
I think the play is Sundowns and over 2.5 goals at 29/20.
