Chippa United coach Thabo September has opened up about the club’s attempts to sign Kermit Erasmus, citing a breakdown in contract negotiations.
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns forward had been training with the Eastern Cape-based club but departed after the parties failed to reach an agreement.
Speaking after Chippa’s 2-2 draw against Marumo Gallants at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium on Saturday, September expressed his disappointment.
“Yes, he was training with us, but it didn’t work out. We would have liked to sign him, but there were certain things that the club couldn’t agree with,” September told Dispatch Live.
The coach admitted he was eager to bring Erasmus into the fold, as the 34-year-old striker’s experience and skills could have bolstered the team’s attacking options.
Erasmus has been a free agent since parting ways with Orlando Pirates last year. Despite his pedigree and previous stints with clubs like Stade Rennais and Cape Town City, he has struggled to secure a contract during the current transfer window.
With most teams looking to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season, the question remains whether the former Bafana Bafana striker will find a new home soon.
Chippa United, currently fighting to stay clear of the relegation zone in the Betway Premiership, could have greatly benefited from Erasmus’ experience. However, September remains optimistic about his team’s prospects as they focus on the second half of the season.
It remains to be seen where Erasmus will land as the transfer window continues, with several clubs likely still trying to bolster their squad for the remainder of the season.
