South African attacker Cassius Mailula has bid farewell to Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca following a successful loan spell.
The 24-year-old was recruited into Wydad at the start of the season by the then-head coach Rulani Mokwena on a season-long loan after struggling for game time at his parent club, Toronto FC.
He continued to be a regular in the starting lineup even after Mokwena’s departure, helping the club to a third-place finish in the Botola Pro League 1.
He was featured in 36 matches, scored six goals and provided seven assists across all competitions. He is expected to return to his club, which participates in Major League Soccer, next season.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write this message, as I want to let you all know that I will not be continuing with the team for the upcoming season,” Mailula wrote in a statement that was released on his social media platforms.
Mailula was part of the Wydad team that was participating in the FIFA Club World Cup and got eliminated in the group stages. His last match was against Manchester City on June 18, where they suffered a 2-0 loss.
“My time with Wydad has been an incredibly special and rewarding experience, and I will forever be grateful for it,” he continued.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns player also thanked Mokwena, with whom he first worked with at the Chloorkop-based team before his move to MLS in July 2023.
“I must thank the President for giving me the incredible opportunity to represent Wydad, and Coach Rulani for his unwavering belief in me. Without his trust, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.
“I wish the club, the fans, and everyone involved nothing but continued success in the upcoming season and beyond,” he concluded.
