The Betway Premiership resumes with a crucial encounter between AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban this Tuesday afternoon.
Mamelodi Sundowns will be aiming to solidify their position at the top of the league table, while AmaZulu, currently sitting 13th and dangerously close to the relegation zone, are in dire need of points.
Midfielder Bongani Zungu, who recently joined Usuthu after a stint with Sundowns, has called on his teammates to bring their best to this crucial encounter.
“I know Sundowns very well and I have a lot of friends there. It is a club I played for over many years,” said Zungu.
“AmaZulu have been doing well. I watched some of their games before I decided to join them and because of the style of football both teams play, it is going to be a fascinating game.
“Both teams have similarities and they play what you can call modern football, so I am expecting a good game and from our [AmaZulu] perspective we have to apply ourselves well and want it more.
“If you are hungry and want it more on the day, you can match Sundowns. It is going to be an emotional game for me but I trust the team and coaches. Everyone is calm and it will be a good game to watch for everyone.”
Zungu’s insider knowledge of his former team could prove valuable, as he plans to share tactical insights with co-coaches Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane.
Meanwhile, Masandawana, under the guidance of head coach Miguel Cardoso, sit comfortably at the top of the league.
With players like Peter Shalulile, Marcelo Allende, and Teboho Mokoena in fine form, they aim to solidify their position and end the year on a high.
Despite their dominance, midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise has cautioned against complacency, anticipating a stern test from AmaZulu.
“We are playing a difficult game because Amazulu are looking for points just like we do,” said Mkhulise.
“The mere fact that they will be playing at home will make them put up a fight because they’ll be looking to make their supporters happy on home soil. They are not an easy team to beat, especially because they have outstanding players.”
The match comes after Sundowns enjoyed a solid preparation period following their last game on Wednesday.
In contrast, AmaZulu face the dual challenge of improving their form and overcoming a tactically astute opponent.
