Betway Premiership preview: Siwelele aiming for victory against Richards Bay

Betway Premiership round five fixtures will be opened by Siwelele, who will welcome Richards Bay FC at Dr Molemela Stadium this evening at 19:30.

The Natal Rich Boyz started their new campaign with three losses, to Marumo Gallants, Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs.

They recorded their first points in a 1-0 victory over Chippa United at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Tuesday with a goal from new signing Gabadinho Mhango.

Siwelele, meanwhile, kicked off their season with a 3-1 victory over Golden Arrows but have since lost to Orbit College, Polokwane City and most recently TS Galaxy in a 2-0 loss following a brace from Seluleko Mahlambi.

Speaking after his side’s first win, Richards Bay coach Ronnie Gabriel said he expects his side to grow from strength to strength.

He said in the Sowetan: “We had to look at our previous results, and we felt that against Gallants and Arrows, we played well. We dominated the stats in those games and created numerous goalscoring chances, but ended up on the losing end.

“Against Chiefs last week, we were not too good, and we ended up on the losing side. On the Chippa match, there was pressure on us to get the three points, and the points had to start ticking on the table as well. The boys did that and delivered.

“We need to start picking up points consistently now, midtable [finish] should be fine. Obviously, we had better expectations when we started the season, and the first three games not going our way, we had to readjust our thinking capacity and think of a realistic target.”

Siwelele boss Lehlohonolo Seema has a mandate to ensure the club’s safety in the Premiership, having been appointed by the club for their debut season after buying the top-flight status of SuperSport United.

Following his arrival at the club, the new head coach said on FARPost: “We don’t want to see ourselves in the relegation dogfight. Those were the exact words of the chairman [Calvin Le John]. What happened last season in the league with SuperSport United must not happen.

“That is the first mandate. People have been asking about my mandate, so the mandate is to make sure that even after next season, Siwelele are still in the league. We’re here to stay.”
