Betway Premiership preview: Relegation battle intensifies

Mamelodi Sundowns ended the 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign as champions once again, securing their eighth league title in succession. They will now shift their focus to the final of the CAF Champions League against Pyramids on Saturday.

Meanwhile, teams on the opposite end of the log continue to fight for their survival to avoid the relegation play-off, while others have set their sight on qualifying for next season’s MTN8 competition.

Here are the previews and predictions of this weekend’s league round of fixtures:

Saturday May 24

33/10 AmaZulu | Draw 22/10 | Orlando Pirates 8/10 (15:00)

Usuthu’s fight to retain their top-eight spot will be seriously threatened when they host Pirates. They will aim to take advantage of their recent struggles after confirming a number of key players have been sidelined due to injuries.

Mandla Ncikazi’s tenure at the helm began with a 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy. Mpho Mvelase scored a last-minute goal to ensure that they share the spoils. He will have a chance to turn things around on Tuesday when they face SuperSport United. Back AmaZulu to win.

22/10 Cape Town City | Draw 2/1 | Stellenbosch (15:00)

Sparks will fly in the Cape derby as both teams are in serious need of securing maximum points. City is currently at the bottom of the log, and a win may boost their survival chances. They will be high on confidence after defeating Polokwane City 2-0 in their recent match.

Stellies is fighting for a return to continental football after a successful campaign where they were knocked out in the semi-final of the CAF Confederations Cup. They are separated by one point from fourth-place Sekhukhune United and must come out victorious if they are to leapfrog their way into that coveted spot. Stellenbosch to win.

18/10 Golden Arrows | Draw 2/1 | Sekhukhune 14/10 (15:00)

Manqoba Mngqithi’s Golden Arrows will be looking to end a seven-match winless run, but will face a daunting task as Sekhukhune have their own ambitions to secure CAF qualification and are enjoying a good run.

With two games to go for the KwaZulu-Natal side and sitting 13th on the log, their back will be against the wall as they fight to retain their PSL status.

Sekhukhune United are unbeaten in their past six matches and have a chance to finish in a CAF qualifying spot for the third time in the club’s history. They failed to secure three points against Kaizer Chiefs last time out but will draw confidence from their latest 2-0 victory against Arrows. Bet on Sekhukhune to win.

7/10 Kaizer Chiefs | Draw 23/10 | Polokwane City 15/4 (15:00)

Both teams are experiencing a poor run of form and are fighting for a spot in the top half of the log. Polokwane had a good start to the season, sitting in the top five positions for the greater part of it, but things took a turn for the worse, and they have been dropping points.

Amakhosi are coming to this match with a score to settle following a 2-0 loss against City at the start of the season. Nasreddine Nabi gave DDC graduate Aden McCarthy his first start in the senior team, as left-back Bradley Cross is serving a suspension. McCarthy proved he has what it takes to compete on the bigger stage and had a good game in both defensive and attacking duties. It remains to be seen whether he will be featured in this match. Chiefs to edge Polokwane.

15/10 Magesi FC | Draw 2/1 | Marumo Gallants 17/10 (15:00)

Magesi suffered a 3-1 baptism in their first match against Gallants. However, a lot has changed since then. Owen Da Gama turned their situation around and saved the team from returning to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. They will be looking to return to the winning lane after suffering a 2-0 loss against Sundowns in their last league outing.

Gallants squandered their chance of climbing the table to the top eight when they were held to a 1-1 draw by toothless Chippa United last Saturday. They will want to finish the season with a win, but Magesi should give them a run for their money. Back this match to end in a draw.

13/10 SuperSport United | Draw 2/1 | Richards Bay 2/1 (15:00)

The woes of SuperSport United continued when they were defeated by Stellenbosch. They are set for another tough match against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday before they turn their attention to this match.

Richards Bay, on the other hand, held their provincial rivals Golden Arrows to a goalless draw in their last match. They have managed to survive the drop, but will be motivated to get a win and finish as high as possible. They were edged 1-0 in their last meeting with the Pretoria-based team. Bet on SuperSport to win.
