Orlando Pirates will face Mamelodi Sundowns in a highly anticipated Betway Premiership showdown on Sunday, 16 March, at FNB Stadium.
Originally set to take place on 15 March at Orlando Stadium, the fixture was moved after a collaborative decision by both clubs following discussions with Stadium Management South Africa.
The change of venue was deemed necessary due to concerns over traffic management, overcrowding, and overall security for supporters attending the match.
The move to the Calabash, with its massive 94,736 seating capacity, is considered the best solution for a fixture of this magnitude. The original venue was Orlando Stadium, however it capacity of 37,313 has raised concerns about the potential for overcrowding during what is expected to be a sold-out event.
Given the rivalry and the significant fan bases of both teams, the decision to shift to FNB Stadium will allow for better crowd control and ensure a safer environment for the thousands of supporters who will likely pack the stadium.
The matchup between the top two teams in the Betway Premiership is set to draw massive attention. Mamelodi Sundowns currently hold a commanding 18-point lead over Orlando Pirates at the top of the league table.
However, Pirates still have four games in hand, and if they win all of them, they could close the gap to just six points, making this encounter even more crucial for both sides as they battle for supremacy.
Sundowns under Miguel Cardoso have been in excellent form, but Spanish tactician José Riveiro will be keen to make a statement, after his sides drubbing earlier in the league by Downs. Kick off is scheduled for 15:30 on 16 March.
