Betway Prem: Samir Nurkovic and Christian Saile demolish 10-Man Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium

SuperSport United delivered a scintillating performance to thrash 10-man Kaizer Chiefs 4-1 in their Betway Premiership clash at the Calabash on Tuesday evening, completing a comprehensive victory that showcased their clinical finishing and tactical superiority.

The win was a massive boost for the Tshwane side, while the defeat dealt a blow to Amakhosi’s ambitions of finishing in the top three.

Former Chiefs players Samir Nurkovic and Christian Saile played pivotal roles in SuperSport’s stunning win, with the duo scoring the first and second goals, respectively. Gamphani Lungu and Siphesihle Ndlovu added to Chiefs’ misery, rounding off the scoreline with the third and fourth goals. Amakhosi’s only response came from Glodly Lilepo, who scored their solitary goal, but it wasn’t enough to mount a serious challenge. To make matters worse for Chiefs, Gaston Sirino was sent off in the 69th minute after picking up a second yellow card, further hampering their chances.

The defeat was a major setback for Chiefs, who had been hoping to close the gap on the top three, while the win saw SuperSport rise in the standings, as they continue their push for a higher position. SuperSport now sit in 12th place with 20 points from 18 games, while Chiefs remain in 6th place with 25 points from the same number of matches.

It took only three minutes for SuperSport to take the lead, as former Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic was on hand to finish from close range following a precise cross from Gamphani Lungu. Despite being on the back foot early, Chiefs had a chance to keep the game alive when Lungu’s attempt to double the lead was blocked off the line by Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley.

Amakhosi responded in the 30th minute, with Glodly Lilepo rising to head home an equalizer, leveling the score at 1-1. However, the parity was short-lived as SuperSport regained the lead just moments later. Nurkovic turned provider this time, feeding another ex-Chiefs player, Christian Saile, who made no mistake with a low shot that put the visitors ahead 2-1.

With SuperSport in control, Chiefs struggled to create meaningful chances, failing to find a way past SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss. Tashreeq Morris came closest in the 60th minute, but his attempt was comfortably saved by Goss, leaving Amakhosi frustrated.

In the 63rd minute, SuperSport extended their lead when Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma failed to clear the ball effectively. Lungu pounced on the loose ball and finished from close range to make it 3-1. Chiefs’ night then took another turn for the worse when Gaston Sirino was shown his second yellow card in the 69th minute, reducing Amakhosi to 10 men.

As the game neared its end, Siphesihle Ndlovu put the final nail in the coffin with a well-taken goal in stoppage time, securing a 4-1 victory for SuperSport. The visitors left the pitch with a commanding performance that underlined their dominance on the night, while Chiefs were left to reflect on a disappointing loss that leaves their top-three aspirations in jeopardy.

This result not only secured all three points for Matsatsantsa, but also completed a league double over the Soweto giants. Kaizer Chiefs will be in action against PSL powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns next, as a result of their scheduled clash with Royal AM being postponed. Kick off in Pretoria is set for 15:30 on Saturday, 1 March 2025.
