Durban City Kicks Off Their Top-Flight Journey with a Win
In their highly anticipated debut, newcomers Durban City showed they’re ready for the big leagues by defeating TS Galaxy 2-0. After a cautious and goalless first half, Durban City came out of the tunnel re-energized.
The breakthrough came just a minute into the second half when Samkelo Maseko found the back of the net. Just over ten minutes later, Mfanafuthi Mkhize doubled the lead at the hour mark, putting the match out of reach.
Under coach Gavin Hunt, City was content to absorb pressure and look for counter-attacking opportunities. The Rockets, despite controlling possession, couldn’t find a way past goalkeeper Darren Keet, who secured a clean sheet. This victory puts Durban City in a strong position early on, proving they’re a team to watch this season.
AmaZulu Grinds Out a Narrow Victory
AmaZulu began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win against another debutant, Orbit College.
The decisive moment came in the 24th minute when an own goal from Orbit’s Sekhoane Moerane gave AmaZulu the lead. This was a direct result of relentless pressure, with a dangerous cross from Riaan Hanamub forcing the error.
AmaZulu’s defense, led by goalkeeper Darren Johnson, stood firm throughout the match. Johnson made a crucial save in stoppage time, denying Orbit a late equalizer.
While Orbit College showed plenty of fight, creating several opportunities in the second half, they ultimately couldn’t convert their chances. The win gives AmaZulu a solid start under coach Arthur Zwane, who will be pleased with his team’s tactical discipline.
Gallants Snatch Late Victory Over Richards Bay
In a thrilling finish, Marumo Gallants secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Richards Bay. Gallants took an early lead with a goal from Bheki Mabuza in the third minute.
However, the momentum shifted when Diala Manaka was shown a red card, leaving Gallants with ten men for most of the match.
Richards Bay capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Lundi Mahala equalizing in the 55th minute. Just when it seemed the match was headed for a draw, Simo Mbhele delivered a stunning long-range strike in the 91st minute to win it for Gallants. The victory highlights the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.
Polokwane City and Magesi Settle for a Draw
The first matchday also saw a tense goalless draw between Polokwane City and Magesi at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Polokwane City dominated the first half, with Sibusiso Tshabalala creating several chances. A shot from Mokibelo Ramabu even rattled the crossbar just before halftime.
Magesi, however, grew into the game in the second half, with Delano Abrahams coming closest to scoring for his side. Both teams will walk away with a point to build on, but Polokwane will likely feel they should have taken all three after failing to convert their early opportunities.
